Waterproof Camera Case Fact-File
A waterproof camera case is a simple and relatively
inexpensive way of getting into underwater photography. In essence, a waterproof
camera case is an air padded plastic bag into which you can securely and
confidently fit your existing, non-waterproof, digital camera.
The problem with the majority of digital cameras is that they stop working if
they get wet, so underwater photography is out. You can go to the expense of
finding an underwater digital camera or perhaps an underwater camera housing
specific to your model... Or you can invest less than twenty quid and get a see
through jiffy bag which will do a good enough job for most holiday snaps.
An impact resistant, heavy duty PVC, waterproof camera case will keep your
air-dwelling digital camera 100% dry. They have clear front and back panels
allowing access to all the usual camera functions, similar to any mobile phone
cover you may have seen.
The waterproof camera case is injected with air bubbles similar to bubble-wrap
which means that in the unfortunate event that your camera is dropped
over-board... it floats. Hurrah. This air padding also gives your waterproof
camera case some impact protection on land as well.
Other than being waterproof a camera case also protects against sand, dust,
suntan lotion and even beer! But does this mean they are waterproof or merely
splash proof? Well, the 'Overboard Waterproof Camera Case' (pictured above) is
guaranteed waterproof to 19ft which is ideal for photographs in the pool or
whilst snorkelling.
There will inevitably be some question when it comes to picture quality. You
will be taking pictures from inside a plastic bag which will of course add some
distortion to your shots. However, this is not a professional underwater digital
camera and does not have the associated price-tag. The picture quality, while
not perfect, is still in line with those disposable waterproof cameras for sale
in most airport lounges... and will last you a lot longer.
Perhaps the one drawback to using a waterproof camera case is that most are not
suitable for cameras with a telescopic zoom lens. But again, this is not for
professionals. In fact, very few underwater photographers will ever use a zoom
lens due to poor visibility. Most prefer to work with much closer objects and
close-up photography.
The waterproof camera case is perfect for the occasional underwater shot and is
also a great way to keep your digital camera safe and clean whilst travelling.
With prices ranging from only £15.00 up to around £30.00, this is one accessory
the majority will be able to 'slash out' for.
